Though the fire burned far from this place, its smoke carved this silhouette.
What touches us may begin far away —
but so too can the impact we leave behind.

Location:

Behind the Shot:
Captured in the Black Hills of South Dakota, this lone tree stands silhouetted against a sun muted by wildfire smoke drifting from hundreds of miles away, on the other side of the border with Canada.
Though the fire burned far to the north, its haze reached this quiet hillside — a stark reminder that the effects of our actions extend beyond what we see, and that even the most distant flames can alter the light we live in. Wildfire haze was prevalent across my journey through the midwest and is now a common summer occurrence. When haze blocks the sun all summer and the bread belt can no longer produce the same amount of food, it will be too late to care.
